If you’re not used to setting goals for your business you might be reading this thinking “Ugh, what a waste of time. I’m doing just fine!”

Setting goals is the first step to a successful business. There are six crucial steps you need to take to achieve your goals. It gives you a clear road map of where you want to be each month during the year. Don’t make the mistake of creating a strategy before setting a goal which would be the same as planning a trip without knowing the destination.

1 – Set Your Intention

Intentions set the course and determine the direction you’re headed and ultimately the results you achieve. Intentions are even bigger than goals. It’s less about the what and how and more about the who and why. It should be a deep-rooted purpose and much more personal than just about making money.

Discover your intentions by asking important questions that will encourage you to evaluate different areas of your life as well as considering what you want out of life.

Whether we believe it or not, we tend very much to get what we think about.

2 – Choose Your #1 Goal

Many times we set too many goals and they are so broad we get confused, overwhelmed and can’t manage them.

Choose one or two goals that are realistic, attainable with a reachable time frame. Think about the things you REALLY want to achieve – things that will help your business grow. This allows you to focus and put all your energy into accomplishing these goals.

3 – Break the goal into mini goals

Break down your number one goal into mini goals and set deadlines. This can be done as quarterly or monthly goals. Creating an overview or a schedule of tasks makes things much clearer, less scary and much more attainable. This process encourages a proactive approach and makes you feel good when you can see the process of reaching your goal. Celebrate when you achieve the smaller goals with fun little things like buying yourself something, enjoying a glass of wine or just relax in front of the TV.

4 – Set weekly goals each Monday (mini mini goals!)

Break down your mini goals even further. Set 4 to 5 goals for the week each Monday morning. This takes around 5 minutes, saves you time and gives you a level of focus.

5 – Accomplish Your To-Do’s

After you created your goals you have to show up to work and finish them! Don’t set and forget.

6 – Review Your Goals

In order to accomplish your goals you have to constantly review where you are in the process so you can adapt and change course if necessary. By tracking your progress, you’ll be more aware of what’s working and what’s not. You’ll learn how to stop wasting your time doing things that aren’t helping you achieve your goals. It also helps to remind yourself how far you’ve come, so you continue to stay motivated.
